The chameleon-like figure of Mercan Dede – also known as Alan Arkin and half-a-dozen other stage names the Turkish artist has given himself – continues to explore his fascinating mixture of Sufism and electronic music. After a long period of exile in Canade, Dede returned to his home city of Istanbul in 2004. There, he built a studio that straddles the mythical Bosphorus frontier between Asia and Europe. Following his 2005 album Su, he released Breath and has promised a final CD in the series, called Earth. His commissioned work for the 2006 Métis Festival in France, entitled The Temptation of Istanbul was another audacious attempt to marry traditional and electronic sounds around an 11-piece ensemble.
